Non-govermental organization Sagittaria - Association for Nature conservation of Central Moravia was established at 6th February 1991 as the Association for spiritual and material revitalization and development of the Landscape Protected Area Litovelské Pomoraví. In 1996 the Associtation was re-named to the Sagittaria and is now working not only in the Central Moravia region, but in the whole Czech Republic. The mission of the Sagittaria is the active approach in nature and landscape conservation, encouragement and initiative of activities resulting in sustainable development and use of resources. One of the main objectives of the Sagittaria is to inform public about nature conservation and environmental issues with emphasis on nature values and its threats. The organization can also work as a platform for communication and information exchange. The Sagittaria cooperates with state administration authorities. It prepares proposals for designating new small-scale protected areas and evaluates its status. It is also engaded in the management of protected areas and sites proposed in the Natura 2000 network. One of its main objectives is the preparation of species rescue programmes and its realization. It is also interested in establishing landscape ecological networks and carries out projects financed from the landscape revitalization programmes of the Ministry of Environment. It performs biological evalutations and inventarization field surveys. The Sagittaria is as well accredited land association and in certain cases it hires or buys land of present or potential high biological value. Its important role is also the publication of different teaching and information materials and environmental education activities (nature trails, information boards, brochures and leaflets). The main activities of the Sagittaria can be summarized in several following points: - realization of inventarization field surveys and mapping of valueable parts of landscape - preparing of management plans for small-scale protected areas and proposals for establishing the new protected sites - management of valueable sites - protection of certain endangered plant species (rescue programmes, monitoring and research) - environmental education - cooperation with state administration authorities in nature protection tasks - hiring and purchasing of land with high biological value, projects of the land association - works as an information centre - conservation and research of endangered butterfly species
